Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a hereditary disease affecting the nervous system controlling voluntary muscle movement. It involves the loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord, causing muscles to weaken and deteriorate (atrophy) from inactivity due to lack of nerve signals. SMA is classified as a motor neuron disorder.
